Airport runways are designed to remove as much standing water as possible but still need to be level enough to allow a plane to land safely. During heavy storms, an airport catch basin is in place to remove as much water as possible.

Standing water on the roadway, job site, or in an industrial or manufacturing facility is more than an annoyance – it can be quite dangerous! It doesn’t matter if you’re in a car, forklift, or other industrial equipment. Now imagine that standing water on the runway as a Boeing 737 comes in for a landing with 200 people aboard.

These basins must follow all state and federal aviation specifications. This includes strength ratings and the appropriate steel grating on top. The stormwater is then removed from the area through a series of pipes to either a treatment facility or drainage area. Click here for a .pdf for more information.

Precast Advantages

Concrete is the most used building material in the world, more than all other materials combined. The strength, longevity, and relatively maintenance-free care of concrete make it the ideal choice for heavy-duty service. Precast concrete has all of those characteristics, just with more consistent quality than pour in place concrete.

Ready When You Are

With enough lead time, Columbia Precast Products will have the basins you need when you need them. Once the excavation is complete and proper bedding is in place, precast catch basins can be installed and backfilled the same day.

Unsurpassed Strength

Produced inside of a controlled environment, Columbia Precast Products oversees every step of the production process. The mixture, the pour, and the curing process are consistent because outside elements are never a factor. This ensures the basins are ready for service when they arrive at the job site.

Quick Turnaround Times

Our plant is designed to produce catch basins all day and all night. If you need 10 or 100 pieces, we have the equipment and the crews to create what you need, when you need it. We also have many standard sizes all ready to go, cutting lead times to just a few days to allow for delivery.

Sustainability

We use all-natural and raw materials, our products are chemically inert, and they’re built to last a century. Because our products are built to last, we actually produce fewer products than those built from metals, clays, or plastics. We have been recognized for our eco-friendly process and “green” products.

Airport Catch Basin: SMaRT Certified

As the first buried infrastructure plant to earn SMaRT Certification, we take our role as stewards of the land very seriously. In addition to everything above, we are able to preserve and recycle any wastewater or materials that don’t “make the grade.” That means less goes to the landfill and more goes into our products.

But we don’t stop there. We choose our partners and vendors based on how it might affect the environment. They must have similar values of course, but their location is considered, too. If we can get our cement from two sources, we’ll choose the closest location – this cuts down on emissions during delivery.

It may seem like a minor detail, but it’s a big deal to us. The Pacific Northwest is known for its beauty – and the desire to keep it that way. We’re no different in that respect: We grew up here, live here, and play here. And the environment is one of the reasons that keeps us here.

Looking to install or replace your airport catch basins or have other buried infrastructure needs? We have worked extensively with both the Washington and Oregon Departments of Transportation and are quite familiar with their codes and regulations. Reach out to us for an estimate and we’ll see how we can help.
