So why use precast footings? Aren’t poured-in-place footings just as reliable? If time isn’t a concern, extreme cold or wet weather isn’t in the forecast, and you’ve hired a reputable concrete company, you might be able to create a comparable product. But why deal with so many variables?
Once excavation has been completed, precast footings are ready to go. There is no need to set up forms, place reinforced steel, wait for hardening, and then strength testing. All of that has already been done back in our facility. As a building material, concrete is hard to beat. But why not use the best product you can?
This is the Pacific Northwest – inclement weather can have a negative effect on concrete poured on site. For example, cold or wet weather can affect poured concrete mix. Moist ground may degrade the bottom of the modular tube being used, too. That can affect the strength of the concrete as well as the composition of the footing.
Backfilling can also affect the alignment of the footings if they haven’t been properly braced. If one footing is just a few inches off, it could throw the whole project out of whack. Built with a wide base, precast footings will be as precise as you are.
